EP12 of Adventure Photography On Location is a total fail… it’s not always perfect and what would an adventure be without occasionally failing, right?
Every once in a while you don’t succeed. Actually, it happens quite often!
This is one of those times. We met up too late, hiked too slow, the sun was too fast and the location too far… sometimes you don’t get lucky and you just don’t quite get the shot. But you know what? That’s what adventures are about!
So instead of showing success in every episode I’d like to, this one time, share my failings. It’s not all bad though. I managed to squeeze in some cinematics of our race against the sun, admittedly a mediocre time laps and finally a few words of wisdom. So hopefully you do enjoy it anyway, learning something and are inspired to go on your own adventure.
We hiked along Pipe Track for about 45min to get to a hidden cave looking back over some of the Apostles of Table Mountain, and watched the blue hour fade to darkness and the lights of Camps Bay turn on as we ate a sandwich and enjoyed a chat about how beautiful this place really is.
The hike was very much worth the view and in no way do I regret failing to capture a shot.
The episode was filmed with the OM-D E-M1 Mark II + 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO in Cinema 4K (4096x2160px) and flat profile (except for the time lapse sequences – that was recorded 1920x1080px – All-I) .
This camera + lens combination has become my favourite video kit. The sensor + lens stabilisation is a miracle and seemingly by magic (and incredibly engineering), manages to smooth out ±90% of the shake I produce while using the camera handheld. No need for a tripod or gimbal!
For the final render I downscaled the footage to 1920×1080 and cropped it to 16:9 aspect ratio for YouTube. By using a larger recording format you get more detailed looking downscaled image and I’m very pleased with the final result.
