In EP17 of Adventure Photography On Location I’m about to capture some of my favourite Namibia photographs… in the middle of nowhere at a place called Spitzkoppe. Come join me!
Spitzkoppe is one of those places that turns up out of the middle of nowhere. You drive along a flat, desert landscape for a few hours and suddenly, this bump appears on the horizon, building as you approach. ‘Doesn’t look thaaat big’ was my first thought… but it just keep growing and growing. By the time we were within a stones throw we were twisting and turning our heads out of the window to see the top of those once tiny boulders scattered around the edge of this mountain. Turns out they are the size of houses and there was no chance of actually getting to the top of them… Forget about the mountain itself. How was I going to capture Spitzkoppe?
We decided to scout the area and found a few really cool subjects that would work well for sunrise. My goal was to be as prepared as possible for the next day since this place was so much bigger than I had anticipated.
I was also looking for spots to capture the ASCO 4×4 car in action. With barely anything around to compare the size of this place to, adding your fully equipped 4×4 into the shot really helps to emphasise the scale of things here.
For the night we shared the mountain with 2 more people… that was it. It truly felt like we were discovering this place all for ourselves. Always a nice thing. And with plenty of super basic ‘camp sites’ scattered and hidden away around the mountain we got to pick our favourite one for the nights.
While the weather wasn’t on our side upon arrival, things turned for the better shortly after and the remaining storm clouds turned into a vibrant colour show for sunset and I managed to get the shot I was after for the 4×4. The rain had left puddles and the golden light of sunset was absolutely perfect.
At the following morning we made our way to the famous arch. As predicted the sun was going to rise at the perfect angle to capture a silhouette inside the arch. Again, without a person in the shot this thing looked totally insignificant. Once we stood under it though…scale is incredibly deceiving in this place. But I’ll let the pictures do the talking here.
As always, I hope you enjoyed this last Namibia episode.
