The Print

The print is a 8×12″ (20x30cm) image printed onto birch wood.

The Story Behind This Shot:

Air Rev is one of those images every surf photographer loves capturing. Timing is key for this kind of shot – and often times things go wrong, which makes for an even bigger reward when the everything comes together and the shot is in focus.
I captured this particular shot at D-Bar right on the boarder between New South Wales and Queensland in Australia on a perfect Sunday afternoon during the annual Quiksilver Pro WSL event. The waves were doing their thing and the competition provided the talent required to capture a move like this.

Captured with the Olympus E-M1 and M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens. Probably my favorite combination. The camera really becomes a deadly accurate focussing machine gun with this lens. Makes shots like these almost easy

Read below for more information on the print and how it’s made. It’s a rather cool and unique process and the wood texture definitely adds great character to the shot!

The Print

The print is a 8×12″ (20x30cm) image printed onto birch wood.

The Story Behind This Shot:

Halloween was captured during a perfect spring sunset in Curl Curl –  Australia in 2014. It was one of those afternoons where the summer on-shore winds had destroyed the surf and it was time for me to turn my lens away from the ocean get creative. I was about to pack and leave when I saw this girl taking a photo fo the sunset with her phone in the distance. I ran like a crazy man down the dunes back onto the beach to get low enough to capture her silhouette. I must have looked ridiculous running down the beach lying down low onto the sand shooting the sky. Oh and guess what day it was? Yep Halloween. I don’t think photographers really need to dress up for the occasion… we’re weird scary enough as it is.

Captured with the Olympus E-M1 and M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO.

The Print

The print is a 8×12″ (20x30cm) image printed onto birch wood.

The Story Behind This Shot:

Horizon Reflections was captured during my trip to French Polynesia in August 2015. In order to get a spot on the media media boat for the WSL Billabong Pro at Teahupoo I turned up at 6.30 every morning at the dock and asked if I could join them. After a couple of mornings they gave in and allowed me on board. I captured this image on my first ride out with the media boat looking out onto the outer reef. The ocean was unbelievable still and the clouds made a perfect reflection. You could practically flip the image upside down and get away with it!

Captured with the Olympus E-M1 and M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8. The E-M1 has some of the most amazing on sensor stabilization imaginable. Meaning the whole sensor moves to compensate for the photographers movement/shake. This even worked flawlessly while I was sitting in a rocking boat climbing up and down 10ft waves! Again, making my job of capturing the surfers getting barreled easy.

The Print

The print is a 8×12″ (20x30cm) image printed onto birch wood.

The Story Behind This Shot:

I captured ‘Sailor’ on my visit to French Polynesia in August 2015. I took one of the few ferries across from the main island to the island of Moorea. This must have been one of the windiest boat rides I have ever done! It was close to impossible to hold on to the rail when I spotted this sailing boat heading for Moorea in front of us. Not only did he look like he was about to fly away with the next wind gust, Moorea looked like an island from death too with storm brewing over the tropical mountain peaks. Luckily it cleared up before I got there and I didn’t see a drop of rain after.

Captured with the Olympus E-M1 and M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro. The E-M1 being so lightweight and weather sealed was really essential for this shot. The winds were blasting and rain and saltwater was hitting my face. No problem for the E-M1!

Wood Print: Speckle

$200.00

Find out more here: 6 Wood Prints Giveaway

The Print

The print is a 8×12″ (20x30cm) image printed onto birch wood.

The Story Behind This Shot:

Speckle is one of those shots you get every millionths attempt. Captured at Dee Why on an early morning swim. Nothing beats the sun rising over the horizon and lighting up a wave from behind like it does in this shot. It’s a moment that might just last for a fraction of a second. Add a surfer pumping his way through the wave and a droplet of water on the lens port on the underwater housing refracting the light and you get: Speckle. Not sure if I will ever got a shot like this again… I guess that’s the beauty if it all.

Captured with the Olympus E-M1 and M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO inside the PT-EP11 housing. The E-M1’s focussing capabilities surprise time and time again! This is a particularly difficult shot for a camera. moment before the direct sunlight was hitting the sensor and add a load of movement in multiple directions to the scene and yet the camera seemed to know what I wanted to focus on, tracked the surfer and shot a perfect burst of images. What more could I have asked for?

Wood Print: Sunset Walk

$200.00

Find out more here: 6 Wood Prints Giveaway

The Print

The print is a 8×12″ (20x30cm) image printed onto birch wood.

The Story Behind The Shot:

Sunset Walk is an image I captured in Australia during a rather flat day of surf. With a promising looking sunset I decided to stick around a little longer than usual and most surfers were coming in to call it a day.
As the sun set below the horizon the clouds opened up a little and the light was reflecting in the spray of the ocean and blocked off by the clouds and created these amazing sun rays – to finish off the shot this surfer walking home after his session passing right through the scene and making a perfect silhouette.

Captured with the Olympus E-M1 and M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 I made use of the high dynamic range of the E-M1 and the compression of the longer focal length lens to add emphasis on the clouds and sun rays and compress the surfer and sky together into one frame.
