COVID-19 INFO

Due to the current world situation, this workshop is, of course, not 100% certain.

However, like all of us, I hope we that this situation changes over the coming months and that we will be back to exploring and sharing these beautiful places together again. So, I’d like to start somewhere and at least share the possibility of a workshop.  If it’s SAFE and possible, then I will try my very best to make the workshop happen.

If however, due to the virus, the workshop has to be cancelled, you will, of course, get a full refund.

DETAILS

Have you ever wanted to go to Central Asia? Meet real nomads? Go to one of the remotest of places this planet? Don’t mind getting dirty and dusty on a long day on the road inside a 4×4? And you like to learn how to capture real adventure stories, epic landscapes and travel photos?

Then this workshop is the right thing for you!

Well, this is more than just a photo workshop, this is a Real Adventure!

Join pro adventure and landscape photographers myself, Chris Eyre-Walker and Olympus Xplorer Ben Simon Rehn on this epic trip through Tajikistan!

The Pamir Highway Workshop is a 12-day 4×4 road trip through the stunning valleys of some of the highest mountains of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. We will spend nights at remote nomad camps inside the nomad tents (yurts), eat the local food, get a little lost off-road and go on epic hikes to 4500m peaks (and beyond).

This will be my third return trip to the area. Since my first visit I have made many connections and friends in this part of the world. This allows me to offer you not only a well organised but also unique experience.

We will be driving through some of the remotest parts of this planet and a good driver, comfortable 4×4 and local connections make all the difference here. However, some of the locations will be entirely new to me too. This means you’ll learn how I deal with new locations and how to capture them. As mentioned: a real adventure!

Pamir Highway

Our drivers are locals and we will stay in guest houses and will eat the local food. Some of the villages we pass through have no or only generator power for a few hours each day. Life is tough and simple up here. So, don’t expect a luxury trip, but be prepared to be welcomed to the homes of some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

By going on this adventure trip you’ll be directly supporting the lives of many locals!

Most days we will be spent in of a 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers (or similar). There will be 3 students, one driver and one teacher (either Chris or Ben) per vehicle. We will be in constant communication at all times via radio and we will stop at any time you like to capture photos. There will be a total of 2 vehicles.

So we’re a small group which means everyone gets the time to ask specific questions and learn.

It’s a long, round-trip journey (±1500km!) and for the best part of this journey we will be above 4000m altitude!

ACCOMMODATION

The accommodation is included in the price. This can vary from a nice hotel (by Tajik standards) to a yurt (nomad tent). The rooms are mostly doubles and the yurts are shared by up to 4 people.

Please understand that due to the remote nature of some of the locations the facilities (like flushing toilets and running water) are very limited. Expect to not find hot showers every night.

The food in these areas usually consists of a rice or potato based warm dish or soup with vegetables and a little meat. In general it’s possible to eat vegetarian meals. Again, mostly basic… don’t expect ‘haute cuisine’, you’re at 4000m attitude having lunch with nomads. It’s part of the experience.

However, we will stock up on road snacks (dried fruit, chocolate, chips, nuts etc.) You’ll never be starving. Promised!

GETTING THERE

Begin and end of the workshop will be in the city of Osh (Kyrgyzstan). Osh has an international airport and is fairly well connected. You can easily travel to Osh via Istanbul or Moscow and in general it takes you no more than one day to get to Osh (from Europe). Same goes for departing from the area.

DIFFICULTY

This workshop is suited for all levels of photography. From total basic knowledge to advanced / pro photographers. Everyone will learn and get the opportunity to shoot photos of a lifetime.

This is a long road trip. This means long days on a bumpy road with plenty of dust and dirt on the menu. Plenty of stops make the longer days easier on the back (and bum) and, in general, anyone who can walk can do this trip.

On some days we will go on optional 1-6h hikes. Not being able to join these will, in no way, make this trip less enjoyable. You’ll always have an alternative to shoot something with less hiking involved.

That being said, a general level of fitness is always a bonus and will help you be able to move around more easily in the rough terrain and at these extreme altitudes.
